Fair Director, Carl Wilhelm Hirsch, and Fair Manager, Lovisa Smyth Vasseur, share their top artwork and gallery picks ahead of Affordable Art Fair Stockholm, 5 - 8 October 2023 at Nacka Strandsmässan.
As Fair Director, it’s my pleasure to welcome you to the the 11th edition of Affordable Art Fair Stockholm. Despite months of planning and production, you can be sure that I’m just excited as many of our visitors to roam the halls of Nacka Strandsmässan to see what my heart and mind gravitates towards. Before your visit, I’ve hand-picked some of the must-see gallery stands and artists fresh from our list of first-time exhibitors, to give you a taster of what to expect at our 2023 edition.
As the name suggests, Galleri Glas, work with several very talented artists within the field of glass-blowing. Glass art has been exploding on the Stockholm scene and I cant wait to see the pieces by Gunnel Sahlin that will be exhibited at the fair.
One of our SPOTLIGHT segments will be presented by Konstkompaniet, with a focus on their artist Kristoffer Zetterstrand.
The main focus of his work is an exploration into how two-dimensionality relates to three-dimensional generated images. He is interested in interrogating how the two dimensions react and interact, with a mind blowing attention to detail that I love in an artwork.
The work that North London Printmakers will be bringing to the fair is whimsical and creative. I could spend a whole day with the printmakers admiring their stand, and I certainly wouldn’t be bored at any point! The quality and range of their prints is amazing. And, as a family friendly gallery, their values align with the ethos of our fair. They have really helped me, as a father of two, in trying to educate my children about the different art techniques.
Beyond taking part as an exhibiting gallery, Link Image Photography have also partnered with our charity partner Storasyster – an important organization that works to stop sexual abuse through both prevention and education.
We’re very excited for Link Image Photography to return for 2023 alongside the important messaging of Storasyster.
This will be my 7th Affordable Art Fair, and I am so excited to show you what we’ve cooked together for this year’s edition – the art, the evening events and our dreamy food and drinks partners, it couldn’t be better!
I saw Lola Luk’s pieces at an Affordable Art Fair in London a few years back when I was working with the UK team, and I have not been able to stop thinking about them since.
I love the playfulness and the bright colours mixed with the sometimes slightly darker messages in the popsicles. We completely sold out of her pieces last year, so I can’t wait to see which of Lola’s pieces Wanrooji Gallery brings this year.
The first time I saw Kombo Chapfika’s art was at an art exhibition at Artillery Gallery in Harare, and I completely fell for his way of expressing himself. The satirical harshness mixed with the soft tufted textiles and pastel colours offered something I’d never seen before.
We’re excited to have one of his pieces onsite this year, in a collaboration together with Expedition Humle, and I can’t wait to see what he will create for the Zimbabwean Pavillion at The Biennale in Venice in 2024. Definitely someone to keep an eye on!
Artist Collective Greko & Nyström are one of our new additions for this year, and it will be great to see their pieces live at the fair. Greko creates large abstract paintings with wide expressionistic brush strokes in calming colours. Nyström’s pieces have a very cheerful feel to them, from her ceramic noodle pieces to her textile noodle artworks. They make the child in me happy as well as the minimalist Swede in me (and it makes me think of the Justin Timberlake’s noodle hair era).
My final recommendation is to go and have a look at Giulia Cairone’s pieces during your visit to the fair. She is one of the selected artists under our SPOTLIGHT segment, curated by Sylvia Rynell.
The colours, style and shapes always puts me in a good mood, which I think is one of the key things I look for in art.
Now you’ve got our top picks, you’re prepared with a first look at what to expect from Affordable Art Fair Stockholm, 5 – 8 October 2023 at Nacka Strandsmässan. Don’t miss out on our much-loved event – we’d love to see you there!
