We’re delighted to be welcoming new work from Joseph Klibansky to Affordable Art Fair Amsterdam this year (31 October – 3 November, de Kromhouthal). Alongside exhibiting his monumental sculpture ‘Leap of Faith’, the fair will host the launch of Klibansky Editions.
We caught up with Joseph to find out more about the man behind the spectacular artworks:
I had an amazing childhood – my parents have always been hugely supportive of me. From the very beginning, they were interested in what I was making and always encouraged me to talk about the stories behind my artworks. When I got a little older, I wanted as many people as possible to see my work so I would set up exhibitions in the garden for family and friends to visit. Eventually, interest in my work started to build from various directions.
There isn’t one! Every day is so totally different. One day I’ll be in LA for meetings and the next I’ll be back in the studio working on the next big canvas or making 3D designs for new sculptures.
I’m inspired by so much of the world around me, fashion, design, music and travelling. I travel a lot for work and meet so many new people. You’ll see the reflection of society in my work and most of my ideas take form when I’m sitting in a plane. There, I’m offline and I love it! I use the time flying to work through my thoughts for future projects, free from distractions.
I haven’t really received a lot of advice about how to do things, but I think the most important thing in any career, and in life, is to stay true to yourself, keep your feet on the ground and respect everyone. We all have our own story. And I think success comes largely from your own sense of drive and determination.
There isn’t one dedicated story behind each of my works. What I find important is that people remember my work and that it has ‘stopping power.’ By that I mean, people literally stop what they’re doing when they see my work, take it in quietly and hopefully come up with their own story about it.
The moment I saw my astronaut, ‘Leap of Faith’, in the middle of the Museumplein really was a goosebumps moment for me! The perfect location where my artwork was surrounded by the most beautiful museums in Amsterdam. This then went viral on social media and meant that I received a whole load of new projects from across the world, especially from China and the US. It was great to find out that there was a global audience interested in my work.
Despite all the projects that we do abroad, for me it’s important to show my work in the Netherlands and have direct contact with lots of Dutch art lovers. At an art fair, you receive direct feedback on your work and I am really looking forward to it to that interaction.
Hell yes! There will be a wide selection of the Editions on display. A screen print release that people have been waiting for, for a long time, will be shown for the first time at Affordable Art Fair Amsterdam. We’re bringing lots of the very best!
‘Leap of Faith’ has made a whole world trip and has been in many different beautiful spaces. It was also a “centerpiece” in the Museum de Fundatie and is on the cover of my book. My work reflects the world of now and tomorrow with an occasional surrealistic approach.
Joseph will also be doing a live signing on Friday November 1st – join our newsletter here and stay tuned for the announcement of when Joseph will be on site. We hope you’re looking forward to seeing his works at Affordable Art Fair Amsterdam (31 October – 3 November, de Kromhouthal) as much as we are!
