The Argentinian sculptor and architect, Alejandro Propato, will present his monumental installation Fuchsia Deployment at this year's 17th edition of Affordable Art Fair Amsterdam. Get to know his practice with a deep dive into his inspirations and creative processes.
Alejandro Propato is a sculptor and architect from Argentina, who is currently based in Buenos Aires. He studied architecture at the University of Buenos Aires and graduated in 1995. Since then, he has developed his architectural practice and skills for space designing while exploring how to transpose them to monumental art installations. His installations are inspired by nature and interact with its surrounding environment. Alejandro Propato often uses aluminium poles as a structure for his installations which he then links with thin threads of ropes.

‘The works I present in public spaces are related to their surroundings and try to be part of the harmony of human beings with nature.‘
Propato is inspired by public, urban and green spaces. To him, these environments create a peaceful space where one is invited to pause and contemplate. His installations intend to reproduce a similar sensory experience and aim to create a transition between urban and natural spaces.
This project was designed for the public park ‘Parque de los Niños’ in Buenos Aires and is inspired by the shape and ogival geometry of a ceibo flower, the national flower of Argentina. For the sculptural installation, Propato used several kilometres of red string, which he tied onto the metal poles. The eight-metre high installation was surrounded by ceibo trees.
The work was visible from a distance, creating different experiences as the viewer got closer and closer. A play of light was created when the sun shone through the strings.
The installation was shown for 10 months, as Propato is a firm believer in the ephemerality of art, life and also respecting the ecologic principle of never leaving a permanent trace in nature.
Permanent Sunrise is a monumental installation that has been exhibited in three different countries over the years: in Argentina, during the festival ‘Sculpture by the Sea’ and ‘Swell Sculpture Festival’ in Denmark and Australia. The work was presented in all locations at a beach or next to a lake, aligning with the horizon to create a visual effect of a sunrise over the water.
The installation is made of poles and long strings in the colours of a sunset, creating a beautiful gradient. The work is an ode to the poetic power the sunrise has on humans and the fact that we can all be artists; we’re all able to create beauty in this world through our visions.
We’re so pleased to be welcoming Propato to present Fuchsia Deployment and PROAS at this year’s Affordable Art Fair Amsterdam. Fuchsia Deployment is an impressive installation which will be suspended from the ceiling of De Kromhouthal using 4500-metres of rope. The installation will hover above our central bar. You can view the process in more detail by watching the video below. PROAS is a site specific installation created for the entrance the fair. It is composed of six pyramidal prisms constructed with fuchsia strings.
We can’t wait to see Alejandro Propato’s installations at the fair. Book tickets now and join us for this year’s 17th edition of Affordable Art Fair Amsterdam from 1 to 5 November at De Kromhouthal.
