Keith Ancog on art that breaks boundaries, ahead of the Affordable Art Fair Hong Kong

Ahead of his trip to Hong Kong, we spoke with Keith Ancog to get the lowdown on his inspiration behind creating the Hong Kong campaign artwork. Read how intuition, spontaneity, and composition plays a role in Keith Ancog’s Envisage series!

You are originally from the Philippines, has your Filipino background influenced your work?

The vibrant use of colour in Filipino fiestas and cultural events greatly influences my art practice. Filipino traditions are characterized by a rich tapestry of hues, reflecting the festive spirit of the people.

From vibrant clothing, lively decorations, colourful foods, these traditions have become a significant source of inspiration for my work. My meditative practice also serves as a gateway for exploring themes of freedom, spontaneity, and embracing a free spirit in my artwork, providing me with a contemplative space where I can channel and manifest ideas in my paintings.

Can you describe your creative process in creating the “Envisage” series?

Intuition is a paramount factor in the creation of the ‘Envisage’ series. My painting process starts by selecting the primary palette, followed by intuitive mark-making to guide the composition and colour arrangement.

The creative endeavour involves a significant element of play, allowing spontaneity to guide the brushstrokes and palette knife work. Additionally, I draw inspiration from elements of nature, such as light, which become integral components woven into the layers of these paintings.

“As the process unfolds, the artwork gradually unveils its final image.”

What emotions do you hope evoke in your audience?

An abstract oil painting with blue background, centering horizontal and vertical brush lines in bright colours of orange, blue, white, and pink. The painting is hanging on the wall above a wooden sofachair on the bottom left, and three decorative vases in brown and orange on the bottom right.

While recognizing that emotions are subjective and personal to each viewer, my paintings aim to serve as a tool to both acknowledge and elevate those unique sentiments. My hope is for my artworks to infuse positive energy into the homes of collectors, serving as a reminder of the beauty found in childlike joy and the liberating sense of being carefree.

How do you determine when a piece is complete?

Determining the completion of a piece is a nuanced process, blending technical considerations, and personal and emotional aspects. Each painting is a delicate interplay of these elements. Once I achieve the right harmony and balance among these components, it strikes a chord, signalling the moment to set aside the brush, signifying the completion of the artwork.

Can you walk us through a typical day in your studio?

Typically, my creative process begins with a morning meditation to center myself. Once everything is in place and I stand before the canvas, I allow the creative energy to flow organically. A painting session usually lasts 2-3 hours, punctuated by a refreshing coffee break to rejuvenate my mind.

Can you tell us about your journey to the arts?

My art journey began during my formative years, as I discovered the joy of drawing in grade school. Early on, I found inspiration in sketching Marvel hero characters and exploring landscapes. I have since then, pursued a Bachelor of Fine Arts in university, and participated in various exhibitions.

Five years ago, my wife and I decided to embark on a new chapter in New Zealand, where I am currently based. Since 2022, I have been represented by Kris Ancog Gallery and have had the privilege to showcase my work in exhibitions across Australia, Singapore, and Hong Kong.

“The artistic realm always felt like home to me, and the act of creation became a profound source of fulfilment.”
