Welcome to our Print and Photography Route Guide of Affordable Art Fair Hampstead, 8 – 12 May!  Whether you’re drawn to the magic of photography or the beauty of original prints, this is the guide for you. Dive in to explore a curated selection of the finest Photography and Print available at the fair.

Both Photography and Printmaking boast rich histories, providing endless opportunities for capturing diverse subjects, ideas, and experiences. From sweeping architectural landscapes to intimate portraiture, photography is limitless in its ability to convey powerful narratives and evoke contemplation, fostering a deeper connection to the world around us.

The ancient art form of printmaking remains a popular medium for many artists today. It involves the production of images through techniques of multiplication – often by applying ink to a surface, which is then transferred to create multiple images. This unique and evocative medium seamlessly blends technical skill with creativity. Today, there are four main types to explore: woodcut, etching, engraving, and lithography, with some artists combining two or more to make one-of-a-kind prints!

Today, the boundaries between the photography and print are increasingly blurred, with artists often combining processes to create cutting-edge and unique mixed-media artworks (some of which you’ll have a chance to see at our Hampstead fair!).

So, without further ado, let’s dive in and discover what’s on offer at Affordable Art Fair Hampstead!

As you enter the fair, veer right towards row L, where you’ll encounter captivating photography by Norwegian photographer Erlend Mikael Sæverud. Sæverud’s work delves into the streets, weaving dramatic narratives that balance opposing forces – past and present, darkness and light, the tangible and the ethereal, truth and fiction. The skilful use of light in these spontaneous street photographs guides the viewer towards an unknown destination… how mysterious!

Next, head over to row H to uncover the playful world of Pop Art prints by Andrew Mockett. His large-scale, brightly coloured prints feature popular cartoon characters painstakingly crafted from woodcut blocks and multiple screen-printings. Originally part of mechanical reproduction processes, Mockett’s clever inversion of the established order defies viewer expectations, and infuses these familiar Pop figures with a fresh and unexpected energy.

5. TAG Fine Arts, stand G2

A quick jaunt across the aisle will lead you to the vibrant lino prints of British artist Tobias Till. London is Till’s enduring inspiration. His works combine various viewpoints, from expansive aerial views to ground-level images, to convey the way the urban landscape changes as we walk through it. He seamlessly shows us both the overall sense of a place, and the personal details that lie behind it.

Now is the perfect time to stop for a drink at our central bar – it’s tiring work hunting for the perfect artwork!

Now, make your way to Air Contemporary, just around the corner, where you can explore the eye-catching work of Mexican artist Paul Fuentes. Influenced by Surrealism and Pop Art, Fuentes’ layered digital images blend beauty with the fantastical, creating compositions so well-orchestrated they could be easily mistaken for reality. Be sure not to overlook his stunning new piece, ‘Fontana di Trevi’!

A couple of stands down on your left, you’ll find British printmaker David Studwell at ContemporArti. Studwell blends traditional block screen-printing with occasional modern collage into his work. His approach results in dynamic and vibrant artwork, influenced by popular culture, cult movies, and Pop Art. This is evident in his extensive and exciting range of prints featuring icons such as Steve McQueen, Liam Gallagher, and Audrey Hepburn, to name a few.

8. Printmaker in Residence, stand D12

Conveniently just around the corner is Printmaker in Residence, the home of Clink Press, a print publisher and workshop established in the early 1990s by Trevor Price and Mychael Barratt. Here, you’ll find the exciting work of Ukrainian artist Katya Timoshenko. Fascinated by the construction and deconstruction of the image through printmaking processes, Timoshenko employs multiple plate etchings with varying depths of bite, aquatint, and ink viscosity. These techniques result in intricate layers of ink and embossing, skilfully combined by pressure, as beautifully demonstrated in her piece ‘Warrior’.

9. Arc Fine Arts, stand D8

Tammy Mackay, Gosling I, £200, Photopolmer Print, Arc Fine Arts

Last but certainly not least, just round the corner on row D, you’ll find gorgeous and vibrant photopolmer prints by Tammy Mackay. Mackay’s latest series, “HOPE and FEAR,” represents a personal exploration of themes that are richly layered in both process and meaning. Animals and birds feature prominently in Mackay’s work, conveying subtle symbolism within their depiction. While etching and monoprint have traditionally been her primary mediums, Mackay has recently embraced photopolymer plates and drypoint techniques. These methods are often complimented by hand-drawn or hand coloured chine collé, resulting in beautiful images.
