Both genres have a rich history, capable of capturing and conveying a multitude of subjects, ideas, and experiences. From documentary photography to portraiture, the artform is limitless in its ability to tell powerful stories and create beautiful, thought-provoking images which explore our connection the world around us. Printmaking has an even longer history, from the intricate Japanese woodcut tradition to the abstract European modernists. Today, the boundaries between the two mediums increasingly blur, with artists often combining processes to create cutting-edge and unique mixed-media artworks.
So, let’s dig in and discover what’s on offer at Affordable Art Fair Hampstead!
(stand K1). Swing a right as you enter the fair to row K, and you’ll find prints by the infamous artist Damien Hirst, arguably best known for his provocative and often controversial artworks that explore themes of life, death, and the fragility of human existence.
Now cross the aisle to S&P gallery (stand L3) – a London based gallery specialising in photography – with amazing work by the likes of Kate Woodman and Miss Aniela. Best known for her ‘Surreal Fashion’ collection – Miss Aniela’s works are highly stylised and visually stunning, blurring the line between reality and fantasy. Whilst Kate Woodman creates captivating photography that plays with traditional still life compositions. You’ll find her work also in our Art Fit for a King display, celebrating the Coronation of King Charles III.
Conveniently situated next door to S & P, you’ll find Punchbowl gallery (stand L4), where we recommend you stop to admire the wonderful photography of John McRae. You may recognise some lovely London landmarks in Jon’s works, such as the Barbican’s terrace, featured in Brutal Idyll (left).
Now it’s off to La Belle Epoch (stand L7) to discover ethereal photography by Lexi Laine. As a freediver, Lexi travels to some of the most unique and pristine locations around the globe to capture her subjects. Instead of using scuba equipment, she chooses to undertake all of her work on a single breath, enabling her to capture these mesmerizing underwater shots. Lexi’s otherworldly imagery encourages viewers to appreciate and protect the beauty of our natural world.
Swing a left and head around the corner to printmaking specialists, North London Printmakers (stand H8), where you’ll find a huge range of work from local North London artists including Rebecca Denton, Liz Whiteman Smith, Ricky Byrne, Gavin Dobson and many more! It’s a great place to discover a myriad of printing techniques and chat to the artists! Pictured here is a monotype print by Rebecca Denton, of the ladies pond in our stomping ground, Hampstead Heath!
A couple of stands along row H, you’ll find screenprints by Real Hackney Dave (aka Dave Buonaguidi) at Clarendon Fine Art. Dave’s signature typographic screenprints are a bestseller with our fair goers, so definitely worth checking out! Dave’s prints are often produced on old maps, found images and vintage ephemera that he finds at flea markets and auctions.
Also on row H, you’ll find Reisz Gallery – a collective of expert fine art photographers who look to nature as their inspiration. You’ll find new work by Benjamin Rice, including a series of vertical landscapes that play with perspective and scale. His large prints are made up of multiple shots (up to 100 each time) painstakingly combined to create artworks of immense detail evoking fantastical worlds.
Take a stroll around the central bar (now’s a good time to stop for a tipple if you need a break!) then make your way to Capital Culture Gallery (stand B7) and admire James Sparshatt’s latest photography series from Brazil. Sparshatt’s photographic journey began in the early 90s as a photojournalist in Bolivia, and his work has since been exhibited worldwide, featured in prestigious photo journals and advertising campaigns. He has a distinctive talent for showcasing rich and vibrant cultures, including those of Havana, Buenos Aires, and Seville.
We’re finishing off our tour at Printmakers in Residence (stand D11) to see Mychael Barratt’s charming characterful prints. Barratt is a narrative artist whose works are filled with references to art history, literature, and theatre – reflecting his love for these subjects. His prints are held in several notable collections, including those of the British Museum, the British Library, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and even His Majesty The King! So, definitely a top artist to pick up if you’re considering growing your print collection!
