In 5th century BC Ancient Greece, people gathered at the Pnyx in central Athens for assemblies, and the combination of speaker, audience and steps for the speaker was titled the Ecclesia of Demos, translated as Assembly, which refers to ‘a group of people gathered together in one place for a common purpose’.
