Zara Merrick’s textile works are composed of many hundreds of pieces of fabric and she knows where almost every piece came from. Some were cut from treasured past outfits, others given by friends but most were bought during many hours searching markets throughout England and France. Merrick loves ferreting out ornate fabrics, both vintage and contemporary, and has a magpie’s eye for decorative buttons and jewels, all of which help spark ideas for colour and texture combinations. Each piece takes dozens – sometimes hundreds of hours to complete as every element is hand shaped and hand stitched. Merrick has a particular passion for metallic fabrics which add sparkle and reflective light, perhaps an unconscious throwback to her early days as a jewellery student.
Zara Merrick first trianed as a jeweller at Central St Maritns, where she developed a love of detail and fine craft. As time went on though, she found she needed a different medium to satisfy my passion for colour, pattern and texture. Zara's textile works are entirely hand stitched, using vintage and contemporary fabrics sourced from antique fairs in France and England. Thread is incorporated to add depth and shade. Zara also likes to bring intricate detail and precision to her work with each piece taking hundreds of hours to complete.
