About William Packer

About the artwork

For the last 20 years, William Packer has focused on still life painting. Each ‘a little world, a tiny city, a paradigm and parallel reality to be explored in the imagination and realised in the act of painting.’ ‘The greater mystery is ever there, of quite how that dab of paint on the canvas becomes, by some alchemy, something quite other than itself.’ William works in natural light on fast surfaces here using a muted greys and blues. The calm, contemplative simplicity of this piece celebrates the delicate pink rose from his garden in Clapham and belies the artistic struggle to reconcile, form, space and light on to the two-dimensional surfaces of the canvas. This is one of his earliest 'flower' paintings and comes in a wooden tray frame painted off-white and ready to hang.
