About William Packer

About the artwork

For the last 20 years, William Packer has focused on still life painting. Each ‘a little world, a tiny city, a paradigm and parallel reality to be explored in the imagination and realised in the act of painting.’ ‘The greater mystery is ever there, of quite how that dab of paint on the canvas becomes, by some alchemy, something quite other than itself.’

William works in natural light on fast surfaces using a muted colour palette. The formal composition with strong verticals/horizontals and blocks and strips of colour combine to create a work of calm contemplation with the vibrant blue jug at its centre. William is preoccupied with the struggle to reconcile space, form and light on to the two-dimensional surfaces of the canvas and the painting composition can change quite radically during the process so the finished image is not always quite what it seems to be. This beautiful piece comes in a wooden tray frame painted off-white and ready to hang.
