About Vanessa Pooley

About the artwork

‘All Things That Are’, 16x 6x 7cm, is a silver plated bronze sculpture by British sculptor, Vanessa Pooley. As with most of her works, this sculpture highlights the purest form of connection between a mother and her child. Pooley is fascinated by the representation of the female form, making sure to highlight its flowing curves and lines. She is mainly inspired by ample proportions and not conventionally beautiful models. She includes few details on her figures as the overall shape of her sculptures and the creation of negative space is of most importance to her.

Pooley starts by moulding her sculptures in clay which are later cast in bronze. She rarely knows what the sculpture will look like before she starts, so this method allows for constant and easy alteration throughout the process. Pooley is now recognised as one of the best figurative mid-career sculptors working in the UK today. She follows very much in the British tradition of Henry Moore but has created a style of her own, crediting Matisse, Bottero and Baltasar Toro as influences.
