Ann-Helen English, Untold Stories III, No 5, 2017, Hand-painted etching, 80 x 60 cm. The natural and nostalgic are combined in Ann-Helen's paintings. Living on a small island in the Baltic (one of the hundreds of islands in the Stockholm archipelago) for a large part of the year, she distills images from countless observations and memories, and combines them with memories of Swedish fairy stories from her childhood. She often uses printmaking techniques in combination with painting and this is one of a series of unique works that start with an etched ground but is uniquely hand-painted, collaged and inked.
Ann-Helen English was born in Sweden but now lives and works in London. She graduated with an MA in Printmaking from the Slade School of Art in 1981. She has exhibited in many exhibitions and galleries in London and Sweden since 1981 including ICA New Contemporaries (1981), Print Selection Serpentine Gallery (1982), Camden Arts Centre (1984-5), John Jones Gallery (1994), Gallery 8 Sweden (2002), Mellanfjarden Sweden (2002), Harrogate International Art Expo with NOA (2015).
