About Thomas Dowdeswell

About the artwork

The American Series began in the immediate aftermath of the election of the new American president as a way of tracking and interpreting the shifting political landscape and perceived threats to traditional democratic values. This image is divided into three planes; in the lower section a semi-finished or perhaps semi-destroyed wall contains a frantic, abstract birdlike figure in a dull, desert landscape. The vivid white plane behind this character shows the hooded remnants of two previous prisoners suspended by rope. Above them, hooded faceless figures sit at a dining table, apparently being served by and dining on exploited members of society.
