About Stephanie Cate

About the artwork

Europa 30 Study by Los Angeles artist Stephanie Cate is Acrylic on Paper. The artwork size is 24x18 inches framed to 30x24inches. The black and white abstraction explores the Moon Europa, a planet with fire, ice and a potential for life. This is a study for her larger paintings on wood panel. Cate has a fascination with this planet, it’s structure and the potential for life. She is drawn to the wonder of the planets and outer space. Europa (Jupiter II), is the sixth-closest moon of Jupiter, and the smallest of its four Galilean satellites, and the sixth-largest moon in the Solar System. Europa was discovered in 1610 by Galileo Galilei and was named after Europa, mother of King Minos of Crete, who became one of Zeus' lovers. In addition to Earth-bound telescope observations, Europa has been examined by a succession of space probe flybys, the first occurring in the early 1970s. Europa - an icy moon of Jupiter - is slightly smaller than Earth's moon. It is unique in the solar system, being thought to have a global ocean of water in contact with a rocky seafloor. If the ocean is proven to exist, Europa could be a promising place to look for life beyond Earth.
