About Shen Jing Dong

About the artwork

Part of Shen Jingdong’s 'Hero' series, this work shows a soldier without any personal identity. His facial features are vague and his clothing and general attitude seem to deny any personal identity or individuality, these unique attributes have been replaced by a common ideology.

Shen Jingdong sees the soldiers as four kinds of people, the red, the yellow, the bald and the soldiers with hats. The yellow soldiers possess a hue of humanity whereas the reds are symbols of revolution. They are not only dressed in uniform, but also have a fixed upright military posture. The work is inspired by the artist's own experience in the army where personal identity is masked by the uniform.

This painting depicts a marine soldier in his uniform, with an absurd Donald Duck figure holding his hands over the soldier’s ear. The artist enjoys treating serious political themes with playful humour.
