Robert Conrad

About Robert Conrad

About the artwork

Lychener Strasse in the Prenzlauer Berg area of Berlin was on the GDR East Berlin side of the divided city during the Cold War. Robert Conrad extensively photographed East Berlin during the late 80s. Robert Conrad’s description of himself as Architecture Photographer is almost misleadingly modest. In his work buildings take on a quality of symbolic markers and milestones in cultural landscapes. Architecture is used as a prism through which he observes and reflects on the world around him and the past we leave behind. Often Robert Conrad’s images are an act of preserving old things from disappearing - capturing dilapidated buildings as a form of protest against forgetting history. Robert Conrad lives in Berlin.
