This work is comprised of intricate pencil drawings on multiple layers of tracing paper.
Framed in a light wood box frame.
Baliarda's work explores a methodical and contemplative investigation on life, death, fragility and beauty. By individually picking, pressing and drawing the flowers she invests in their transformation from vibrant, wild and beautiful natural specimens to elegant and poetic relics of memory and loss. Through her delicately layered x-ray archive of drawings of flowers she engages in a dialogue of the fragility of life and the inevitability of death.
Mercedes Baliarda graduated from the MFA Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art & Design, University of the Arts, London in 2009. In 2010 she was featured in Anticipation, a group show of 21 artists representing the most exciting emerging talent at Selfridges' Ultralounge curated by Kay Saatchi, Catriona Warren and Robert Dingle.
