About Marianne Nix

About the artwork

Chusan palm blues series. In the Chusan palm series Marianne uses Cyanotype photography, one of the earliest photographic techniques, to play with shadow and light created by the exotic palm leaves of the Chusan palm. Originating in the Himalayas and central China this palm was brought to the UK by intrepid plant explorers. Our legacy and that of previous minds influences Marianne Nix's work. In this case, plant explorers and the work of Anna Atkins, a botanist, who made cyanotype images of the flora she collected in the 19th Century, earning her place as a founding mother of photography. Marianne uses thick Saunders Waterford paper and paints the reactive chemicals onto it by hand. The leaves of the Trachycarpus are then placed on the paper. The paper is exposed to sunlight, washed in water and dried flat for a few days under heavy weights and creates this beautiful evocative artwork of shimmering velvet light.
