The inspiration

Artist Kirsty Wither states of her practice; 'I think of a painting in terms of colour first, then texture, then the subject matter becomes more defined'.

These priorities come to the fore in this colourful oil painting depicting a Scottish landscape. While a sense of place is also important in Kirsty's work, the richness of her autumnal tones and texture built up from her broad brushstrokes are immediately striking to the viewer.

The artist

Scottish artist Kirsty Wither obtained her BFA in painting from Gray's School of Art, Aberdeen in 1990. Since then she has exhibited regularly in solo and group shows all over the UK and became an Elected Artist Member of Chelsea Arts Club in 2004. Kirsty works primarily in oils, stating that she 'love(s) the malleability of oil paint before it dries and it’s permanence afterwards.' She is influenced by early Modernist painters such as Cézanne and Matisse in the sense that the composition of forms and texture of the materials is of at least equal importance to her as the subject matter of her work.
