About Marianne Nix

About the artwork

Inspired by the correspondence between Charles Darwin and JD Hooker Director of Kew Gardens in 19th Century. Hooker was a plant explorer and wrote to Charles Darwin from various places around the world, including the Himalayas. This artwork is made by building up layers using photographs taken by the artist in the glasshouses at Kew, manipulating them with digital tools and then hand paper lithographic printing onto the canvas and painting with oil and oil glazes as well as pure pigment. The ideas and work of these great men still influence us today. The new and old art making materials and tools come together to explore new ways of making art.
