This current body of work is informed by the natural world and forces such as tidal, gravitational, seasonal and chronological. Jo walks most days along the coastline near her studio and documents the changing horizon. She is interested in how natural environments effect the psychology of human beings and the rituals we invent in order to interact with the natural world. YOUTH is a meditation on time, childhood and the freedom we feel as children in the natural environment.
Joanne Hummel Newell’s work is driven by the instantaneous and forever changing concerns of consciousness. She strives to make works which are of interest to society by referring to human habits and social behaviour within the realms of collage, painting, and installation, often of a public nature and not limited to the confines of a gallery. Joanne Hummel Newell (b 1982) studied at Kingston University London from 2001 - 2004 and at The Royal College of Art, London, from 2004 -2006.
