Tiané Goines (they/them) asks, “Is it possible to be nostalgic for an era you were born in and even before you were born? What if that era was not inclusive to people that shared your identities? Can we fix the wrongs of the past – many of which still exist – by reimagining through a new and intersectional lens?”
My project, Fatshion — Reimagining the Fashion World, is my response to a lack of representation and visibility in the fashion world. As a fat person who enjoys mainly fashion of the late 90s / early 2000s / 2010s, I find it nearly impossible to locate clothing from that era in extended sizes in all diverse styles.
It is also rare to see Plus Size Black folks under multiple intersections to be represented in all different types of fashion in the fashion industry and in general wearing clothes. We are often relegated to the periphery and given simple, boring clothing choices (which I highly despise! </3 I love the opposite :)
The photographs in this series imagine a new reality in which none of these identities are barriers. In photographing myself in fun, creative streetwear and kawaii accessories, I am taking back the power that has been taken from me for so long and finally, fully expressing myself through fatshion.
Tiané is a young, Black, fat, Queer, non-binary artist born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. Goines began to take art making seriously in high school while taking art classes with an inspiring art teacher. Goines graduated from LaGuardia Community College in 2021 and holds an associate degree in Fine Arts. Goines is an active participant of Gowanus Mutual Aid, a group that strives to create solidarity in the Gowanus, Brooklyn neighborhood by supporting each other’s needs. Goines recently became the Artist-in-Residence for Arts Gowanus, a not-for-profit organization that supports the local arts in Gowanus.
Kathryn Godoy (they/them) has been creating a body of work that expands upon ideas of memory, psychoanalysis, and transformation that began in their thesis. Although Kathryn is a painter, the works themselves are more assemblages than paintings. Using color, texture and opacity Kathryn evokes the sense of lush, magnificent, gelatinous psychic landscapes they trudge through. Their experience with the triumphs and troughs of manic depression is woven into the narrative of their work.
A previous focus on the body as architectural space and art-historical traditions remains important in current work, however, the perspective has become more tender, emoting protection and healing. Rendering imagery of stars and celestial bodies Kathryn imbues a renewed spirituality and connection to the world around us here and now.
Kathryn is a 23-year-old artist working in Brooklyn, NY. They hold a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts and concentration in Painting from the Fashion Institute of Technology.
Johnny Thornton (he/him) is the Executive Director of Arts Gowanus as well as an artist and curator who lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Born in Connecticut, he spent his childhood in Johannesburg, South Africa, before moving to Tucson, Arizona, where he studied Fine Arts at eh university of Arizona. He received his MFA from Parsons School of Design, The New School in New York City.
Thornton has worked and curated exhibitions throughout the United States and his artwork is part of several collections/ Currently, Thornton works out of his art studio in Gowanus and is the Head Curator & Gallery Director at Established Gallery in Brooklyn.
Arts Gowanus was started 25 years ago by a small group of artists who wanted to start an open studio tour for the artists in the Gowanus area. Throughout the years, Arts Gowanus has grown into a not-for-profit organization that works year-round to support, promote, and advocate for local artists and a sustainable arts community in Brooklyn. We nurture relationships among individual artists, arts organizations, local businesses, and the community.
We believe that the diverse creativity of local artists contributes to the singularly vibrant cultural life and energy of New York City. We believe that it is critical not only for the artists, but also our society in general, that the arts continue to thrive in Gowanus. We produce open studio events, professional development workshops, public art works, artistic collaborations and exhibitions in our mission to ensure artists remain a crucial part of neighborhood identity.
As Gowanus moves into a period of heavy development, Arts Gowanus will continue working with our community partners to ensure that this rezoning will not only keep the cultural workers thriving in Gowanus, but will be based on principles of social, economic, environmental and racial justice.
