“Art is incredibly personal, and for me, it often serves as the starting point for a room’s design.”
Melanie Lissack
I started my career in the music industry, working in digital marketing for major labels like Universal. I was part of the team that launched iTunes in the UK, back when streaming wasn’t even a thing!
When my husband and I bought our first house, it gave me the opportunity to dive into interior design through renovating. My husband is a musician, so he was often away on tour, giving me free reign to experiment.
I was a complete novice – no formal interiors training – though my mum had a passion for decorating, and I’d learned the basics of wallpapering and painting from her. Over the five years we lived there, I became obsessed with colour and design.
After five lovely years in that house we moved outside London and I left the music industry. I was unemployed and on maternity leave at the time, which coincided with the early days of social media. Back then, there was no such thing as influencers – just a handful of people sharing their lives online. It wasn’t the massive, everyday presence it is now.
I began sharing my budget-friendly renovations and design ideas on social media, which started gaining attention. Before long, people started asking for advice on everything from colours to creating cohesive spaces. As my presence grew, brands approached me to try their products and create content. What began as a passion project turned into a career I’ve loved ever since!
Melanie Lissack“I’m especially drawn to pieces created by independent makers.”
Colour is my thing! I love exploring how different colours work together. This year, I painted my hallway blue with bright orange accents. It felt like a bold choice at the time, but it works beautifully.
There’s so much joy in uncovering design elements that spark excitement – whether it’s a stunning wallpaper or beautiful handmade ceramics. I’m especially drawn to pieces created by independent makers and have a particular love for ceramics produced by women. Discovering incredibly skilled, independent artists through my work is something I deeply enjoy.
Art is incredibly personal, and for me, it often serves as the starting point for a room’s design. Sometimes, a piece of art inspires the entire color scheme for a space. Other times, I look for art that complements the colours already in the room.
For example, in my bathroom, I have a small painting of a blue tit on a branch. It’s hung near a window where you can see real birds outside – it just feels perfect in that space.
I also enjoy creating affordable artwork by framing postcards or small prints. When I travel, I pick up little pieces that can be framed later, bringing personal memories into my home in an accessible way.
I’m a big advocate for colour! My go-to shades include blues, greens, pinks, burgundies, and lilacs – they bring so much depth and personality to a space. I also have a real love for bold wallpapers and intricate patterns, as they instantly add character and make a room feel alive.
When it comes to artwork, I’m drawn to pieces that have texture and vibrant colours. Artists like Iain Andrews and Kate Burns are huge inspirations for me. Ian’s work is so layered and colourful, while Kate’s striking, abstract florals are just stunning. I often take cues from these pieces to mix patterns and colours through cushions or accessories in a room.
Melanie Lissack“I love visiting Affordable Art Fair. It’s such a brilliant way to see a variety of styles and price points in one place.”
I have quite an eclectic taste. I love modern pieces, fun art, and florals. One of my favourite pieces this year is a painting of a sardine tin by a French artist Ortaire de Coupigny, bought from Ronen Art Gallery at Affordable Art Fair – it’s so quirky and makes me smile every time I see it. I also adore playful pieces like Dan Jamieson’s Hate Plates series, which are always a conversation starter.
At the same time, I have a deep appreciation for fine art and vintage pieces. I recently bought a vintage floral painting that brings so much warmth and character to my home.
I find Instagram to be an amazing resource for discovering new art. Following galleries and artists is a great way to stay updated and inspired. Some of my personal favourites include Bleach Box and Print Club London.
I’m also a big fan of visiting Affordable Art Fair. It’s a brilliant opportunity to explore a wide variety of styles and price points all in one place. With pieces starting as low as £50, it’s both accessible and ideal for new collectors looking to start their journey.
For those just starting out, my advice is simple: if something catches your eye, go for it. Whether it’s a postcard, a print, or even a quirky item like a beer mat. You’ll naturally develop a sense of your style over time, and those pieces will make your space truly feel like yours. Don’t be afraid to explore, trust your instincts, and invest in pieces that truly speak to you.

I have a few pieces in my collection that bring me so much joy. One of my favourites is a vibrant yellow painting called Bird Girl by Ellie Vandoorne – it’s so cheerful and uplifting. On grey days, it never fails to lift my mood. It’s hung in the hallway, so it’s the first thing I see when I walk through the door, setting a positive tone for the day.
Another piece I adore is by Dave Buonaguidi, also known as Real Hackney Dave. It’s a bold and bright pink artwork with the words “HAVE MORE FUN” in big letters. It hangs just outside my bedroom, and every time I see it, it’s a little reminder to embrace life and enjoy the moment.
And then there’s a beautiful photograph by Richard Heeps from Bleach Box. It’s a beautiful shot of a funfair at sunset, filled with warm, nostalgic tones. It’s the kind of piece that transports you to a happy place and makes you pause to appreciate the beauty of simple moments. Each of these artworks is so different, yet they all bring so much happiness and personality to my home.
Melanie Lissack“For those just starting out, my advice is simple: if something catches your eye, go for it.”
Absolutely! I love bringing in warmer tones like burgundy and burnt orange, paired with cozy textures. Candles, dried flowers, and thick bedspreads instantly make a space feel inviting. Ambient lighting is also key. Twinkly lights wrapped around shelves or portable lamps in dim corners create a warm, layered atmosphere.
We’ve been in our current house for 10 years, and next year we’re planning a major kitchen renovation! It’s a big project, but I’m so excited to create a more functional, beautiful space. I’ll be documenting it all on my blog and social media – stay tuned!
