You’ve made the decision to buy a piece of artwork… and then what?
To some, the idea and process of buying art might be clear cut, but for most, it’s a new and exciting venture. We want you to feel empowered when it comes to asking questions, trusting your instincts, and forming an art collection that inspires you. So, read on for our best tips on how to start an art collection.
First time art buyers may find purchasing a new artwork or sculpture a little daunting — but it needn’t be. At the beginning, it’s best to start out with some key practical elements you might not have considered. After all, choosing an artwork to buy based on how it looks is the easy bit – always go with what you love – but, when it comes to knowing what to do with your new piece, it’s not always obvious.
Having art in your home is one of life’s great joys, and you’ll be on your way to expanding your collection in no time with the below tips.
You’ve picked a perfect room for your photograph, print or painting. It’s worth bearing a few things in mind first.
Light — ideally your space has some natural sunlight, but a few well-positioned lampshades will do. Helpful hint: avoid placing the artwork too close to a lamp or in direct sunlight, as this may damage and cause your artwork to fade. If unavoidable, you might want to invest in some protective UV glass, which is easy to find at most framers.
If it’s a sculptural piece you have in mind, make sure it’s not placed in a busy corridor where it could get knocked. Think about the size and take a few measurements so you’ll have these to hand when making your purchase.

Buying a ticket to an Affordable Art Fair gives you the best of both worlds: not only do you get access to thousands of artworks all under one roof, it’s also a chance to speak to the experts.
Our galleries understand that buying art is personal — everyone’s approach, budget, and tastes are different. Any questions you may have, chances are the gallerists have heard them all before. Or not sure what to ask? Here’s seven questions to ask when collecting art.
If you’re unsure on the day, why not join a tour of the fair? You may be more drawn to an artist, style or medium once you know a bit more about the inspiration or story behind the work.

Nothing should stop you from having that wonderful work of art you deserve. Don’t assume that it must be costly – buying art might be a lot more reasonable than you think.
Remember it’s important to create and stick to your budget as you shop.
Many galleries offer a ‘try before you buy’ scheme, where you can borrow work to view it ‘in situ’ for a specified period, before making that all-important final decision. Similarly, schemes such as Own Art are fantastic ways to take art home with you, as you can pay in monthly instalments.

You’ve chosen and are ready to whisk your new work home. We love this bit too, but before we can sit back and relax, a little patience is required.
If your work is unframed, you’ll need to get in touch with a framer. Consider a framing option that will conserve and complement.
Once your work is framed, it’s time to hang it. Grab the right tools and get stuck in. Don’t forget to step back, take a few photos, and check you’re happy. Follow our How to Hang Your Artwork tips for the best results.
