Our Affordable Art Fair Brisbane experts Stephanie Kelly Gordine and Nikki Berriman sat down with our Brisbane Marketer Victoria Barns to chat everything Brisbane art scene, from local exhibitions to see and artists to know before the inaugural fair this 9 - 12 May.
Stephanie Gordine Kelly, Asia Pacific MD, and Nikki Berriman, Fair Manager, are integral in steering the Affordable Art Fair ship in Australia. Both bring unique connections to Brisbane, with Nikki being a resident and Stephanie cherishing fond memories from her childhood.
As the Fair Marketing Coordinator, I wanted the lowdown about the Brisbane arts scene from our two in-house experts. Writing this blog in Queensland, where my family has a history of artistic involvement, adds a personal touch. For more team details, visit our ‘Meet the Australia Fair team‘ blog.
The timing aligns perfectly for us to delve into their insights ahead of the inaugural Affordable Art Fair Brisbane at the Brisbane Showgrounds Exhibition Building, from May 9 – 12.
Enough about us. Let’s hear about Brisbane!
Stephanie:
Brisbane’s arts scene is so unique and exciting, with an abundance of talented artists from across Queensland that we can’t wait to showcase at Affordable Art Fair. When visiting Brisbane, I enjoy dropping in on the many local galleries to see the impressive talent for myself. From West End’s murals to Fortitude Valley’s neon glow, each corner of this city still fills me with childhood wonder.
Studio Gallery is a go-to spot for an art fix. Located near luxury James Street, the gallery’s large, crisp white walls set the stage for beautifully curated pieces that catch your eye. Each precious piece adorning the walls comes from artists in varying career stages – from fresh faces to seasoned creatives. You really could spend a while admiring each work in Studio Gallery. I recommend meeting some friends in the coffee-scented air of a nearby cafe before indulging in the artistry to make an exciting day out.
In an inner northern suburb of the city is Red Hill Gallery. The building is a local favourite, and it’s easy to see why. Since 1986, Red Hill Gallery has called 61 Musgrave Road home. Located on the gentle slopes overlooking Brisbane’s iconic skyline, the gallery is housed in a charming red exterior. With fresh monthly exhibitions, a collector is sure to find a piece they love.
Nikki:
Brisbane’s art scene extends both up and down the coast and ventures inland. Toowoomba Gallery adds a unique flavour showcasing regional talent and fostering a connection to the broader Queensland and Australian art scene. The gallery has an uplifting energy from a delightful array of works in all colours of the rainbow and a wide range of subject matter – a collection of pure joy!
Towards the scenic eastern shores is Stevens Street Gallery. The gallery isn’t just a space for art; it’s a dynamic platform for local creatives. Bursting with a diverse array of treasures, the artisan store showcases incredible talent from the beloved Sunshine Coast and neighbouring regions.
Head further south along the sandy coast, to find the TBC Gallery in Burleigh Heads. Exhibiting artist Bastian Allfrey is known for using spray paint in their artworks, both on the canvas and walls of the city. Recently, they completed a large-scale mural of the Broncos in Petrie Terrace. Clayton Blake is another Queensland-based artist TBC Gallery represents. Blake’s practice draws from elements of architecture and sculpture, and their work has travelled overseas to be exhibited at events including the likes of Burning Man festival last year. It’s wonderful to see local artists on the global stage.
Stephanie:
There is a wealth of inspiration to be found in Queensland. Home to vast expanses of open land with sweeping views that stretch endlessly, artworks will likely capture the wildlife in our backyard. This may be in the form of winged friends that soar high above or vibrant scenes of flowers, including the iconic jacarandas, which bring a colourful reminder that the holidays are around the corner.
Nikki:
GOMA’s Fairy Tales is a must-see during these holidays. With magical artworks exhibited alongside iconic filmic elements, there is something to inspire everyone’s imagination.
If discovering emerging local talent is a passion of yours, then Revival Gallery’s Emerging Artist Prize is not to be missed. Opening on 29 February, this exciting showcase of new creative works will run until early March, giving you plenty of time to revisit your favourite pieces and vote for your winner in the People’s Choice Prize!
Nikki:
Andy Harwood is a favourite that comes to mind. Based right here in Brisbane, Harwood creates the most amazing geometric works. Balance and proportion are carefully considered to create pieces that seem alive on the canvas.
Stephanie:
In May, we will host 40 galleries from Queensland and beyond under one roof in the Brisbane Showgrounds Exhibition Building. Visitors can immerse themselves in the delightful world of art, while savouring exquisite bites and beverages as they explore a wide array of artworks – from abstract masterpieces to captivating landscapes, minimalism, and vibrant florals.
Affordable Art Fair Brisbane is sure to have something for any taste and budget, with works priced between $100 and $10,000.
Families are welcome, and youngsters can enjoy complimentary face-painting sessions. The cherry on top? Children under 16 can attend absolutely free!
It’s lovely to hear about all things art and Brisbane from Nikki and Stephanie.
