Finding a new artwork for your home doesn’t need to be complicated. A great starting point when thinking about buying art is to decide the sort of feeling you want a room to have, and colour can be a way to help with this.

There’s truth behind the idea of colours evoking different feelings: warm, rich colours are welcoming and passionate, while cool, pale colours are often much calmer for one’s mind. When thinking about art, it could be that different colours work for different rooms – let’s see what the options are and explore the variety of colour available at our fair!

RED

Sunset, Suz Chiang Tan, watercolour, Rainze Gallery

Possibly one of the most widely seen colours around the world, red holds broadly diverse meanings across different cultures. From love and health to danger, warning – or luck!

Despite the intensity of these symbolisms, there’s no need to shy away from this colour. The theme of an artwork is as important as its colour scheme, and considering the way an artist has used colour in relation to the subject matter is always worth considering.

In these artworks, check out how the ways our artists have used the colour to creates landscapes, skies and portrait painting.

BLUE

Blue is evocative of clear skies and calm oceans – and is also frequently associated with feelings of sadness. It represents wisdom, depth and tranquil calm.

As the sky is limitless, so is the breadth of creativity and imagination that comes from artists working with this colour. Tom Lohner’s beautiful paintings could inspire a deep sea adventure, whilst Geckor’s ‘Brainstorming in the Bathroom’ offers a playful depiction of those mid-shower light bulb moments!

GREEN

Representative of nature, peace and plants, green is the easiest colour for your eyes to process! Landing in the middle of our eyes’ perceptive spectrum, of all the colours it puts the least strain on your eyes.

Whether it’s an abstract piece or soothing landscape, the colour green never fails to calm one’s mind and help us slow down from our busy daily life.

YELLOW

There is no surprise that the colour yellow heralds energy, positive vibes and sunny warmth. Yellow also resonates with gold – giving the colour a luxurious sense of royalty!

A fun sculpture or mixed-media artwork that brings a smile would be apt for displaying this colour in your home. Kate Pang’s ‘Peeled Banana’ or the Jeff Koons-inspired ‘Happy Accident series – Balloon Dog’ from Joe Suzuki are both fabulous examples of this.

MONOCHROME

Fly over the city, Pen So, ink drawing, Galerie Koo
Pinocchio, 2CHOEY, ink, aerosol on paper, 13a New Street Art Gallery
Story, Luchio Lim, mixed-media, T&B Gallery

One might argue that black and white are not colours, but we can agree to disagree! We love the depth of monochrome artworks, as they leave room for the viewer’s imagination: whether evocative of an old movie, or linear drawings that are simple but with impact.

Despite the simplicity in tone, monochrome artworks can bring forth a wide range of feeling. As shown in these examples, the combination of black and white is mesmerising with the effects of light and shadow.
