Find incredible art on a budget with our tour of galleries exhibiting works under £500 at Affordable Art Fair, Battersea Spring, 9-12 March 2023.
The 2023 edition of our Battersea Spring fair is shaping up to be a cracker. With more than 100 galleries bringing the best in contemporary art to Battersea Park on 9 – 12 March, there’s plenty on offer in this guide of artworks under £500.
From pastel abstracts and vibrant cityscapes, to whimsical sculpture and trendy prints – you’ll be able to find a whole host of stunning, bank-balance-friendly works of art to fall in love with.
So whether you’re looking to start your collection, or simply to find your perfect piece while watching those pennies, this is the guide for you.
Let’s go!
We begin at M1 Fine Art, with Faryal Ahmad and her atmospheric landscapes and seascapes. As a Muslim woman, Faryal wanted to practice her love of art, but not in the typical Islamic Art style.
Instead Faryal chooses to combine her love for painting and colour with images captured in her dreams and developed by her imagination.
With music playing whilst she paints, the image changes further as it gradually unfolds onto the canvas. This means that although often inspired by real places each piece is completely original. She calls these “dreamscapes”.
Sarah Fosse is fast gaining a reputation as a highly exciting and distinctive painter.
Using a bold palette, she deconstructs and distorts the urban landscape to create a series of unique and vivid paintings, often using the reflections of buildings in water as a starting point.
She is passionate about colour, its energy, strength and potential and her paintings have been featured by the likes of The Wall Street Journal, Vogue and the BBC.
Just across the aisle is Caiger Art with their hand-picked artworks from emerging artists. Give your walls some wow-factor with any one of their abstracts. We’re particularly in love with Caroline Banks who aims to create contemplative yet celebratory pieces, giving the viewer time for quiet reflection in today’s busy world. We’ve also got a close-eye on Rachel Newton who creates works in a variety of media, producing deceptively understated pieces often on a large scale.
Just a hop, skip and a jump and we’re at Barnes Collective and their stand of authentic South African art. If you’re in the mood for some sculpture then look no further than Tania Babb.
Through clay, Tania expresses the relationships that exist between others, our pets, and the fragile co-existing of these simple yet complex structures that hold a lot of weight. We love how fun these figurines are.
Time for some pattern and they don’t come much more striking than this. Bay Gallery Home has represented artists from the communities of Central Australia since 2008, and are one of the only dedicated Australian Aboriginal Art galleries in the UK. They are currently working with a new Aboriginal art community from Tennant Creek, Northern Territory, Australia and our spring Battersea fair will be the first time the public will view these paintings including outstanding artworks by Evelyn Nampijinpa Daniels and Ursula Nampijinpa Collins.
Just around the corner is Arteria hailing all the way from Bromont, Quebec. Their under £500 offering centres around Isabelle Beaubien who creates dynamic mixed media paintings combining layers of vibrant acrylic colours applied with energetic strokes.
We. Love.
Continue strolling down the aisle to meet ARTCODE who specialise in representing Mexican artists. Based in New York City and Yucatán in Mexico, this gallery explores the fusion of art, science, and technology.
If your perfect artwork is all about expressive depth of colour, look no further than Rafael Maria. His pieces have been featured in private and public commissions internationally and we’re thrilled that his work will make an appearance at Battersea this spring.
Take a quick pit stop before rounding the corner to the next aisle to check out our Under £500 Wall.
Here you’ll find a curated display of even more artworks that won’t break the bank including Pink Pipes by Jacob Talbot from the aptly named BANG gallery – Blackstone Art Next Generation.
We’re anticipating new, exciting work from Jacob Talbot at Battersea including lots of new photography pieces and playful pop culture sculpture. Jacob is consistently being recognised by curators and collectors from both the commercial and conceptual art world.
Firm fair favourites, North London Printmakers are up next and there is a smorgasbord on offer here for under £500. Call us biased but we have a soft spot for London cityscapes and they don’t come much more dramatic than Teresa Schippel Hales’ moody etchings.
If you’re looking for more colour, David English’s bluesy woodcuts should hit the mark and we’re equally drawn to the intricacy of Steve Mitchell’s steampunk infused punctuation.
Right next door is Water and Rock. The south-west of England has long been a place for artistic inspiration and these next two artists from this Bristol-based gallery are no exception to the rule. We’ve been swept away by Chowwai Cheung’s arresting geometric artworks informed by the landscape and coastal areas of Devon. Equally, we’re suckers for a botanical moment and Abigail McDougall’s exotic landscapes totally hit the mark.
Bleach Box make limited edition prints in their Cambridge darkroom and studios. All their artworks are available in a range of sizes priced under £500 and they have an archive of over 3,000 artworks(!) so they’ve got a whopping catalogue of imagery to match different tastes – from colour themes and architecture, to interiors and travel. Richard Heeps’ bestselling artwork ‘ICES’ is now available in a rainbow of colours.
Just beyond Bleach Box you’ll find another Under £500 Wall! So if we haven’t sated your appetite quite yet, you’ll find even more artworks under a £500 price ceiling here.
And with that, our tour is complete! We hope you have a great time exploring Affordable Art Fair, Battersea Spring this March (9-12). If you haven’t booked your tickets yet, you know what to do…
