Beautiful interior spaces that are also kind to the planet are more important than ever. As climate awareness grows, so does the desire for more sustainable options, with many favouring furniture and fittings made from repurposed materials which provide quality, durability, and, of course, style. And why stop there! There are a range of brilliant artists working with repurposed materials.
JFK Turner is an English artist represented by After Nyne Contemporary, who repurposes humble, everyday objects to give them a new lease of life. In his own words, he ‘makes images of things nobody cares about from stuff nobody wants’. By using the unnoticed, ephemeral elements of everyday life (like household paint, varnish, and wax) as the foundation to shape his work, he creates beautiful pieces of art which are not simply paintings, but physical objects with unique stories and textures.
Rose Vickers, represented by Cube Gallery, is another talented artist who uses found and carefully collected materials which would otherwise be wasted. Inspired by simple geometry, she reappropriates commonplace objects like old wooden rulers to create artworks suggestive of traditional patchwork quilts. The outcome is a striking, handmade aesthetic, which celebrates the everyday usefulness of simple tools.
As the uncertainty of the current climate continues, people are seeking more serene design elements that help to create home as the sanctuary. Having a peaceful space where you can rest, relax, and recharge from the outside world is so important. From paintings to sculpture and woodblock prints, you’ll find plenty of artworks at our upcoming Fair in Battersea to help build your restorative haven.
Vu Thu Hien, represented by Raquelle Azran Vietnamese Contemporary Art, lives and works in Hanoi, Vietnam. Hien paints magical portraits of ancestral figures using watercolour on traditional handmade Vietnamese paper. Serenity of Clouds (pictured right) is both imagined and real – a combination of tropical foliage with exotic interiors. It’s a beautiful print for any collection, incorporating themes of family, nature, and emotion.
Sculptures can be a brilliantly successful way of grounding a space to give calm. Richard Perry is a Midlands based artist using geometric language to explore weight and balance through sculpture. Visit Smithson Gallery’s stand to get a closer look of Whirlybird – a sculpture made with both intuitive judgement and premeditated design, juxtaposing organic freeform and measured geometric sculpture to create illusory forms. Stunning!
Serene landscapes are also a beautiful, calming addition to your home. Take painter Katherine Rowe’s Quiet Sun at Old Harry Rocks – a soothing artwork you can admire for hours. Motivated by colour, Kate often spends hours mixing and preparing paints before even touching the canvas. Find Kate’s work at the Fair with Artfully Sorted – back after a three-year hiatus!
What is Biophilic design? It’s a fancy term for bringing the natural world into the heart of our spaces, creating a seamless flow between the natural and built environments. Whilst it might not be feasible for all homes to have their own bio-wall power plant, biophilic art is a great way to incorporate this trend into your home in 2023.
Look out for the work of Jo de Pear at Battersea Spring with Gina Cross Art + Design where you’ll find a brand-new collection of colourful biophilic prints. Jo’s approach to printmaking is experimental. She works with a plethora of tropical leaves found in rainforests, as well as beautiful found sea corals that have washed up on the shore, using the cyanotype print process to create her unique, one-off ‘sun prints’.
Visit Art Friend’s stand at the Fair to experience Illustrator Lucille Clerc’s encapsulating, botanical pieces. Her drawings are completed by hand, which she then develops into screen prints – a meticulous process requiring time and precision. We think the end result is well worth it!
Take a walk through the Amazon rainforest at Al Contar del Arte’s stand, showing My Amazonic Journey by Spanish artist Jaime Sicilia. He explores nature as a possibility of personal redemption and connection with the sublime.
The colour experts at Pantone announced their colour of 2023 as ‘Viva Magenta’ – a vibrant, sassy pink – whilst our friends at Mylands just released an incredibly hot pink paint colour ‘FTT-006™’ (pictured below). So, it’s safe to say, pink is officially the colour of 2023, and we couldn’t be happier! It is our brand colour, after all.
So, what does all this mean for your interiors and ever-growing art collections?
This means it’s time to unleash the pink!
Fulfil your dreams at Art Friend’s stand with an exclusive new series by abstract artist Marcus Aitken, who will be releasing a brand-new series of work especially for the Affordable Art Fair, Battersea.
At Bay Gallery Home’s stand you’ll discover outstanding Aboriginal artworks from Central Desert, Australia. It will be the first time many artworks are unveiled to the public, including this stunning painting by Steven Jupurrurla Nelson. Visit Bay Gallery at our Battersea Spring Fair to discover the wonderful stories behind these timeless paintings.
A touch of gold instantly adds a sense of luxury and striking beauty. The warm glow of gold is undeniable, making it the perfect addition to any home, all year round.
At our spring fair, Caiger Art are bringing artwork by brand-new artist Marta Obojska. In Obojska’s Study of Emotion series, she paints with only two contrasting colours – gold and black. Their juxtaposition both fights for domination and finds balance.
It’s difficult to envision a print more beautiful than Cosmos No. 7 by contemporary printmaker, Kazutoshi Sugiura.
Sugiura relies on traditional Japanese techniques to execute his beautiful silkscreens, applying squares of gold leaf onto handmade Japanese paper. This golf leaf combined with rich, saturated colours is the hallmark of his work. Stop by Hanga Ten‘s stand at our Spring Fair to view more artworks by Kazutoshi Sugiura.
