Hock Tee Tan

About Hock Tee Tan

About the artwork

Tan combines the centuries-old technique of gilding with 21st-century technology to create stunning and eye-catching figurative works of art. Golf and Silver Leaf gilding has been used in art since 400AD, Tan adopts this Roman-era technology to hand gild the background of these pieces. Tan uses a variety of different leaves that have subtle differences, for example, Beijing 23.75 Carat Gold has the yellowness associated with Chinese gold whereas there is more of a pinky hue with Italian Pisa 22 Carat Gold. Pure Italian Silver has a seemingly denser quality giving a more matted surface than Palladium Leaf which creates a more reflective backdrop. Tan then produces a Chinese ink drawing, sometimes very abstract yet always figurative. Tan uses the Chinese Calligraphy Ink that he used when he was growing up and a three-inch brush normally used for large signwriting. The highly pigmented and viscous ink allows for a deep and intense black line, while also providing the perfect fluidity for a continuous line as required in calligraphy. This image is then photographed ready for printing. Working with one of the UK's best Fine Art printers
