Roots Art Collective brings together four artists united by their passion for storytelling through the use of vibrant colours, cultural motifs, and the interplay of Eastern and Western aesthetics. Their work merges heritage and modernity, reflecting diverse perspectives on identity, belonging, and human connections.

About the Artists:
Anjali Bansal Purkayastha is a British-Indian visual artist based in Hong Kong. She is self taught and works across mediums, including paintings, drawings, ceramics, and digital art. Anjali’s signature style is characterised by a graphical and pattern-based approach, which remains consistent across diverse themes. Intricate patterns serve as her unique visual language, evident in every piece she creates. Her work is both intuitive and instinctive. Even though her asian heritage is a core part of her identity, her journey of living in various countries, has led her to explore the shifting nature of identity or belonging. Anjali’s work has been exhibited in India, Singapore, Korea, Thailand, and the UK, and is held internationally by private collectors. She is an artist member of ArtCan Org (UK) and HK Arts Collective (Hong Kong).

Erin Hung (b. 1985, Hong Kong SAR) is a multidisciplinary artist and creative director based in Hong Kong. Drawing on nearly two decades of visual arts practice, she works across large-scale installation, participatory design, and public art. Her work is anchored in a visual language of symmetry, modular structures, and botanical and textile motifs such as orchids, moths, and Chinese knot geometries, woven into systems that invite collective encounter. Her flagship participatory installation Bloom Together for the Affordable Art Fair Creative Hub invites communities to co-create living, evolving artworks, exploring themes of communal care, softness as resistance, and diasporic Chinese cultural memory. Her public commissions span institutional and commercial contexts, including work with UNHCR, Lush Cosmetics, and Hong Kong International School. Erin’s mixed media wooden sculptures extend the visual logic of her installations into intimate, collectible objects. Her work has been exhibited across Hong Kong and collected internationally in private collections.

Marcelle Rosfelder-Leu is a Swiss–Japanese artist of Korean heritage based between London and Zurich. She holds an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art (2025) and an MA in Archaeology from SOAS University of London. Her practice explores breath, gesture, and layered traces of experience through accumulative processes of pouring, staining, and calligraphic mark-making. Paintings develop through successive layers that respond to previous marks, where gestures, emotions, and temporal moments intersect and transform. The works presented here are ink compositions from her Murmuration Series, created during her time in Hong Kong, where fluid mark-making and dispersion evoke shifting rhythms of movement and collective energy.

Seema Mathew (b. 1974, Bangalore, India) is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist based in Hong Kong since 2000. After recovering from cancer, she began her art practice in 2014, initially working with ink on canvas and later expanding to water-soluble graphite on linen. Her current practice focuses on embroidery and sculptural forms, incorporating bamboo, wood, and mesh inspired by Hong Kong’s traditional bamboo scaffolding. Through these tactile works, she explores identity, femininity, and her Indian heritage, by blending textile traditions and colours with contemporary forms. Influenced by natural patterns and materials, her practice emphasizes texture and structure. Seema has exhibited internationally across Europe, Asia, and the United States, her works are held in private collections worldwide.
