Galerie r8m

Founded in 2020, Galerie r8m is located in a former butcher’s shop at Luxemburger Straße 197 in Cologne. The gallery shows contemporary, non-representational, international positions in painting, photography, generative art, sculpture and installation.

With six to seven group and solo exhibitions each year, their focus is on an undogmatically understood Concrete Art, which is supplemented and expanded by conceptual positions.

The validity of the term Concrete Art has long been controversial, without any convincing alternative terms having been able to establish themselves. Nevertheless, Concrete Art has proven its vitality and topicality time and again and has proved remarkably resistant to ideological appropriation since its inception.

While a deeper understanding of figurative art often requires iconographic and art historical knowledge, Concrete Art requires no prior knowledge. While the symbols and metaphors of figurative art are often regionally or nationally characterised in their meaning – and therefore ‘limited’ – Concrete Art is universally understandable.
