Graphite and oil on gessoed wood
Laurie started drawing shadows of trees in my garden since she was a teenager. This marked the beginning of her interest in art and need to make. Laurie says that, looking back, 'it was about capturing the fleeting nature of trees, positive and negative spaces and forms in the landscape. It helped me understand the need to focus less on the recognition of an image and allow the energy and spontaneity of process to become celebrated. I tend to call all of my work drawings even though most of them are drawings combined with oil and mixed media paintings, mostly because the genesis of each piece begins and ends with drawing.'
