About Dan Pearce

About the artwork

Daniel has always made work about the landscape, mainly the urban environment. He observes the world around him and uses drawing as a way of documenting a place and locating himself. The urban landscape provides great opportunities to explore issues of geometry and colour, the boundaries between abstraction and figuration - concerns that fascinate and compel him. ‘The best paintings for me show you something you haven’t seen before; it’s about the artist finding a new way of describing something but allowing the viewer to come to some of their own conclusions’ Bandstand is ‘ from the residency I did at Kensington Palace with the Royal Drawing School. I was interested in the world that existed around the palace as if I were seeing it for the first time. At the time I was influenced by a film by Patrick Keiller London. 'Patrick Keiller spent his time filming around London under the guise of a fictional flâneur known as Robinson – a name citing Daniel Defoe’s trapped castaway’. The last line is a quote from the BFI but pretty much explains my approach to making the work at that particular time.’ This piece comes in a simple matt white wooden frame ready to hang.
