Tom Wilmott
Biography
Tom Wilmott is a painter who lives and works in London. He studied at Central St Martins and Camberwell College of Art and has held a studio since 2004. He is also co-founder of the curatorial partnership Wilderness Projects.
Wilmott’s practice is based very simply on an instinctive need to indulge in the act of painting and a materialist love for the medium. He describes his paintings as “humble, tangible, material constructions made for their own sake”. In 2017, he had a solo exhibition which was held at Darbyshire. ‘The Waltz’ consisted of 108 paintings using black, white and red in a systematic series of compositions.
Wilmott says, “My hope is that my paintings may manifest something of an essence of the grand tradition to which they belong and to this end I strive to produce objects that, in their fabric, embody qualities singular and unique to painting”.
