Susannah grew up surrounded by her father’s colourful collection of vintage toys, which are still proudly displayed on shelves, dotted around her parents’ home.
She has always regarded them fondly and recently began to make a series of paintings of them. Instead of the ‘boxed up’, ‘mint condition’ variety so many prize, it is the scratched and weathered patina that conveys the essence of a much loved and played with object that Susannah is particularly drawn to. As such she has painted each toy with its own unique array of flecks and textural personality.
Through this process she has come to appreciate these toys as objects of sculptural, social historic interest and aesthetic beauty that seem to evoke, in adults and children alike, a sense of joy and emotional nostalgia.
