Sam obtained an honors degree in graphic design at Exeter University, where she specialised in illustration.
Painting from the clients brief was quickly replaced with her own interpretation and imagination, from which she has been creating works of mixed media for the last 28 years alongside raising three daughters, working in the art department of a boy’s school and working in the gardens of a private estate.
Sam spends time in Cornwall whilst also being lucky enough to be surrounded by the wonders of Richmond Park in her everyday life.
Each of these aspects play a part in the inspiration for Sam's work, with a number of flora and fauna appearing throughout.
"I am never without a sketchbook to hand, so I am constantly drawing - sometimes the drawings are simply left in the sketchbook, whilst other times they develop into more in-depth ideas and detailed images"
"My influences, first and foremost are everything I see, feel and remember. I like to use anything that makes a mark onto anything that will receive that mark"
"I believe in painting from your inner source, or your imagination. I am increasingly drawn to sculpture and painting that appeals to the child in each of us"
"I think it is truly important to let imagination thrive in my art. I am not afraid of nostalgia or sentiment and I value taking the time to make a painting 'beautiful'”
