Sally has a background in commercial illustration, which has helped her develop her technique. WHSmiths, V&A, National Trust and Radio times are just a few of the clients that Sally has worked with, but she finds that commercial illustration is very restricted by a set brief, whereas, with her screen prints, Sally can indulge in her passion for the natural world.
Her designs start as crisp graphical shapes, which are then transferred to the screen print. The printing itself adds the texture and slight imperfections to otherwise smooth and simple designs. Sally has been inspired by the likes of Charley Harper with his simplified animals into dynamic shapes and lines.
It is the modest wildlife of the British Isles that inspires Sally most, particularly the characteristics of our shifting seasons. Sally often starts a new piece by first considering what is typical of the season and what atmosphere she would like to convey. Nature is a constant source of inspiration, even in the depths of winter with bare branches and little colour, Sally always finds beauty at the doorstep.
