Abstract

Olha Luk'yanova is a London based artist. She studied Fine Art before earning a first class degree in Set Design from University of the Arts London. She explored various fields in different creative industries, even worked in the Film industry, and finally she developed skills and found a passion for various design techniques which led her to become an independent sculptor. "The Indonesian teak wood roots used here, have been taken out of the ground in areas of the Indonesian vanishing rainforest. All stumps have been left in the ground for more than 20 years, There is a little village in the middle of the island, which has far fewer jobs for locals compared to the seaside resorts. Export of these roots provides a precious and reliable income for people. They only use manual labor to excavate the roots and bring them down to the workshop. No transport routes exist from the top of the hills. The Indonesian teak is all at least 100 years old. Quite rightly, the UK has strict regulations about importing tropical wood like this. Everything here has a proven source and supporting certificates. The artist uses epoxy resin to give UV protection (3-4 layers of the resin, each layer is less than 1mm) and many hours of polishing. The gold and chrome used are car finish colours, compatible with resin."
