Nguyen Lam was born in 1941 in Can Tho. He graduated from National School of Fine Arts Saigon in 1965. Before 1975 he was a professor of the Nation School of Decoration and Fine Arts, Gia Dinh. Lam masters in lacquer on wood and oil on canvas paintings.
Subjects are modern, but the heritage from the ancestors always remains. His art bridges the past and present. Nguyen Lam's abstract oil paintings are vibrant as well as modern and minimalistic. Nguyen Lam uses big brushes and strokes of black paint inspired by the traditional technique of calligraphy. Each stroke is precise and painted only once.
Lam received numerous prizes and awards for his works spanning from 1962. His exhibitions between 1962 and 1975 were highly regarded. Since then, his work was exhibited around the world, many times around Europe, America and Asia. Lam is a member of both Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts Association and Vietnam Fine Arts Association.
