Mike Ellis graduated in 2002 with a First Class Honours degree in Illustration and a prize-winning dissertation about the Samurai where his love of wabi-sabi began. “Wabi-sabi represents a comprehensive Japanese world view or aesthetic centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of beauty that is 'imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete'."  'My oil paintings are part of an ongoing exploration of the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi. 侘寂''Pared down to its barest essence, wabi-sabi is the Japanese art of finding beauty in imperfection and profundity in nature, of accepting the natural cycle of growth, decay, and death. It is simple, slow, and uncluttered-and it reveres authenticity above all . . . . It celebrates cracks and crevices and all the other marks that time, weather, and loving use leave behind.'
