Mike Bernard trained at West Surrey College of Art and Design, Farnham, followed by postgraduate studies at the Royal Academy Schools in London. Having exhibited widely in London and the provinces, he moved to Devon in 2008, inspired by the amazing light. He enjoys experimenting with media and techniques, using mixed media and incorporating collage and acrylics, creating a highly original and appealing style of his own. This method allows the pictures to evolve their own personality as they progress, which avoids them becoming over-representational. His subject matter includes landscapes, seascapes, street scenes and still life. "I enjoy the way textures, shapes, colour and ‘happy accidents’ steer the direction of my paintings." Mike was elected as a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour in 1997. He has won many awards over the years and has exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. He has regular solo shows with Marine House at Beer.
