BiographyMatthew J. Frock's formal art education started early with private lessons at twelve-years. In 1997 he earned a BFA in Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design and 10-years later earned an MFA in Painting from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, USA.
Frock analogises his painting process to a wave crashing on paper. The initial marks are a fast, sloppy rumble followed by smaller, more calculated marks. A finished painting is usually made up of many waves. Frock reflects on three rules that create the natural aesthetic of his work: there are no mistakes; there are no marks too precious to be destroyed; and always react purely to instinct. He believes creating in this way allows for other forces of a chance to involve themselves in the work. Frock's studio practice is driven by his fascination with the mystery inherent in the creative process.
