Matt Smith

United Kingdom

Matt Smith is an artist who often re-works tapestry pieces. Along with is practice, he works as a curator with galleries and is a member of ‘Unravelled’ arts organisation which offers exhibition opportunities in historic houses. As well as this he is currently working as a Professor of Craft at Konstfack University of the Arts in Stockholm. Alongside his ornate inimitable ceramic ensembles, Matt has returned to a love of tapestry and textiles which he’s had since he was as young as eight years old. Using found pieces, some of which are antique, the tapestry pieces are delicately unpicked and then restitched, usually in wool but also silk depending on the original material. Matt’s main motivation with the restitching is to take the prime focus out of the works - removing the figures and replacing them with the background. This allows viewers to project what they want to onto the work and also doesn’t allow the eye to settle on the natural focal point - making them more unsettling and dynamic. Like the ceramics, the process includes taking historical objects and repurposing them into new situations to tell new narratives.
