Martyn Brewster is a professional artist, who was born in Oxford in 1952. His practice developed while studying Art and Design in Hertfordshire followed by his initial studies with a course in Art (Painting) in Brighton. He also graduated with a postgraduate in printmaking. Martyn now lives close to the cliffs and beach of Southbourne in Dorset, the natural landscapes of Dorset have become a key source of inspiration with the sea and the light as well as the colour, all present in his paintings.
Martyn creates striking abstract paintings, combining seductive combinations of colour with vigorous poetic compositions. He produces paintings, prints and pen and ink drawings of the Dorset. He often makes figurative nature studies on-site in front of the motif mostly in blacks, whites and tones searching to express the composition and drama he sees in the multiplicity of nature.
His works have been exhibited widely within London and the UK including retrospective exhibitions at the Russell Cotes Art Gallery and Museum in 1997 and at the study Gallery of Modern Art in 2003 amongst many others. Martyn's works are included in public collections at Victoria & Albert Museum, British Museum, Russell Cotes Art Gallery and Museum, Arts Institute at Bournemouth and Bournemouth University.
