Lily Kemp

United Kingdom

Lily Kemp graduated with a BA in Fine Art Painting from Wimbledon College of Art in 2019. The same year, Kemp was awarded both the Lim Ai Fang Art Prize and The Woon Foundation Painting & Sculpture Prize. Kemp lives and works in London. Kemp’s often large scale paintings explore how women, in particular women of colour, are represented in visual culture and within art history. Kemp is critical of the female nude within art history, the hyper sexualisation of the female body in the media and the exoticism and fetishization of women of colour. In her work, Kemp offers an alternate gaze to the traditional cis male-centred gaze. Collage plays a central role in Kemp’s process, the images of women in her work are sourced from mass media. Kemp is interested in changing the narrative and presenting women as the subject rather than an object. As such, Kemp appropriates the images of women from fashion magazines and re-represents them in an agricultural/industrial work context. Group Exhibitions include: That’s How The Light Gets In, AucArt Virtual Gallery, London, 2020; Herstory, Women in Art, Maddox Gallery, London, 2020, The Recent Graduates Exhibition, Affordable Art Fair, Battersea, London, 2020; The Signature Art Prize, Bankside Hotel, London, 2020; The Clyde & Co Art Award, St Botolph Building, London, 2019; The Woon Foundation Painting & Sculpture Prize, Gallery North, Newcastle upon Tyne, 2019; BA Degree Show, Wimbledon College of Arts, London, 2019; Everyday Forms, Four Corners Gallery, London, 2019; For Love or Money, Copeland Gallery, London, 2019; Spilt Milk, Pop up venue, London, 2017; Foundation Show, Camberwell College of Arts, London, 2016; Young Art, Royal College of Art, London, 2015. In 2019, Kemp was awarded both the Lim Ai Fang Art Prize, The Woon Foundation Painting & Sculpture Prize. In 2015, Kemp was highly commended in the Young Art Competition at Royal College of Art.
