Loo Hooi Nam was born in 1965, Kedah, Malaysia. He is a self-taught artist, who is well-known for his thick impressionist style and a colour palette which is both vivacious and vibrant. Hooi Nam often covers his entire canvas with rich impasto textures, applied with short brushstrokes of broken colour. He uses this technique extensively and to its full effect.
Hooi Nam currently resides in Sungai Petani. He likes to paint outdoors and travels to different parts of Malaysia to find inspiration. His impasto style adds expressiveness to his painting, dramatically recording the act of painting itself.
He was awarded Pesta Pulau Pinang in 1993, 1994 and 1997, as well as Gold Award at SP Setia Art Fair Penang 2011. He is a member of the Penang Art Society, Penang Watercolour Society, Angkatan Pelukis Kedah, Central Kedah Art Society, Malaysian Watercolour Society, North Kedah Art Society, and Artist Membership BSLN.
He has actively participated in many group exhibitions, local and abroad, and has held many solo exhibitions since 2000, among there are The Art Gallery Penang (2000), 50 Humanist Space, Penang (2001), Galeri Mutiara, Penang (2012), City Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur (2012), The Li Chi Mao Art House, Melaka (2012), 6th International Art Expo Malaysia (2012) and more.
