Born in Southampton in 1965, Kevin Dutton now lives in East Dulwich, London. He was introduced to photography by his father at an early age, who himself was an amateur photographer. His first photographs were taken on a box Brownie camera and were processed and printed in his blacked-out kitchen pantry at his home. Dutton later studied drama at Bretton Hall College, Yorkshire but spent most of his time taking photographs.
After graduating from college, Dutton worked as an assistant to various photographers within both the fashion and advertising industry. Dutton then went on to produce a series of studio portraits of comedians which became the exhibition ‘Serious Comedy’ in 1992. Following this, commissions came from various magazines and newspapers to take photos of artists, musicians, actors and politicians. In recent years, Dutton’s work focuses on his lifelong passion for plants and gardens. This has provided a new direction in both field and studio.
Dutton continues to pursue his passion in the UK and abroad for a variety of editorial, design and business clients. He has worked for, amongst many others, The RHS, The Observer, Independent on Sunday, The Sunday Times, BBC, Channel 4, HarperCollins, Lowey, Saatchi and Deutsche Bank.
