Julie lives and works in Leicester. Artists as diverse as Munch, Picasso, Bosch and Bacon have inspired her vivid imagination to develop her own imagery. Julie’s mixed media pieces draw on her experience as a professional stained glass artist to compose from collage and print, a surreal world which evokes the dark side of fairy tales. Memories of childhood recall the fine balance between the world of make-believe and nightmare, of imagination and fears.
Her most recent work uses little if any collage. These drawn and painted images of female faces evoke a past which is both known and unkown. One thinks one has seen such faces; they seem half remembered, and evocative of a name or story. They demand one’s attention, even an emotional response; but they are drawn from imagination; fleeting ephemeral ghosts.
