Jonathan's work, broadly speaking is traditional, that to say all his paintings are observed from life, and executed in oils. His interpretation of the various subjects that he depicts often results in quite a different manner of painting. In his most recent landscapes brushes have given way to a pallet knife and detail has moved aside for a more direct response. The application of paint in these works show us a real involvement, a relationship to the very stuff of paint. This flexible approach shows a healthy and mature vocabulary, resulting in paintings that are both rich and exciting.
