GermanyFigurative Realist Contemporary
The main focus of my practice deals with intimate situations positioned in private setups or in urban spaces. I create photorealistic paintings that represent images of fractured daily life: Images that show the fascination and power of the uncanny and the foreign through pictures that play with beauty, social media and classical aesthetics, as a means to touch the viewer.
Joana Lucas is a Berlin-based Portuguese visual artist. She creates photorealistic paintings that represent images of fractured daily life in the urban environment. Her paintings show the fascination and power of the uncanny and the foreign through pictures that play with beauty, social media and classical aesthetics as a means to touch the viewer. She understands her surroundings through images and uses them as a code to both interpret information and communicate. The circumference of her methodology revolves around the relation between photography and painting, as a way to frame an exact moment of life and trace the human passage. She graduated in Visual Arts from the Faculdade de Belas Artes de Lisboa, University of Lisbon, in 2003. In the same year she received a grant to attend the Statens kunstakademi, in Oslo. In 2004 she studied Advanced Photography at the Portuguese Association of Photographic Art, in Lisbon. In 2005 she received a grant to do an Internship in the Kreuzberger Musikalische Aktion, Berlin. Since then she lives and works in Berlin. Her work has been exhibited regularly since 2001 and in several shows internationally.Show more Show Less
